Bird Flu Cases Surge Among Colorado Poultry Workers
Five Cases Confirmed, Doubling National Tally
Five cases of the H5N1 avian influenza virus have been identified in workers culling poultry at a farm in northeastern Colorado, bringing the total number of human cases in the United States to 10. The preliminary positive tests raise concerns about the spread of the virus, which has infected numerous birds across the country.
Additional Cases Announced
Over the weekend, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) announced that three workers at the poultry farm had preliminarily tested positive for bird flu. Two additional cases were confirmed on Sunday, bringing the total to five.
Most Cases in Any State
These latest cases make Colorado the state with the highest number of human bird flu infections. Six farmworkers in the state have now tested positive this month, accounting for the majority of cases nationwide.
Precautionary Measures
Public health officials are urging residents to take precautions to prevent the spread of bird flu. This includes avoiding contact with infected birds or their droppings, and practicing good hygiene. Poultry producers are also taking steps to prevent the spread of the virus within their flocks.
Further Investigation
The CDPHE is continuing to investigate the bird flu outbreak in Colorado. They are working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to identify the source of the virus and implement measures to contain its spread.
