Auburn Football Announces Hugh Freeze as New Head Coach
Six-Year Deal Signed
Auburn, Ala. - December 5, 2022
Hugh Freeze, the former Liberty University head coach, has been announced as the new head coach of the Auburn Tigers football program. Freeze was officially introduced at a press conference on Monday, December 5, 2022.
Freeze's deal is a six-year contract with an average annual salary of $6.5 million. This makes him one of the highest-paid coaches in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
Freeze previously served as the head coach at Liberty from 2019 to 2022. During his tenure, the Flames compiled a 34-15 record, including a 10-1 mark in 2022. Freeze led Liberty to two bowl appearances, including a win in the 2020 Cure Bowl.
Prior to Liberty, Freeze was the head coach at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) from 2012 to 2016. He compiled a 39-25 record at Ole Miss and led the Rebels to two New Year's Six bowl appearances.
Auburn is coming off a disappointing 5-7 season in 2022. The Tigers fired Bryan Harsin in October after a 3-5 start. Freeze is tasked with rebuilding the Auburn program and returning the Tigers to prominence in the SEC.
