What Does "Lanatulahi Alayh" Mean?

An Explanation of a Phrase Used in Islamic Theology

Question: What does "lanatulahi alayh" mean?

Answer: "Lanatulahi alayh" means "May the curse of Allah be on him." This phrase should not be said except regarding someone who has committed a grave sin or who has shown open enmity towards Islam.

In the Quran, Allah curses those who blaspheme against Him or His Messenger (ﷺ). He also curses those who are unjust, oppressive, or who sow discord among the believers.

Muslims believe that it is important to show respect for the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). This includes avoiding any language or actions that could be seen as disrespectful. Saying "lanatulahi alayh" is considered to be a grave insult to the Prophet (ﷺ) and should be avoided.
